Why do you think that the majority of the A-list celebrities in Hollywood are atheists?

Are they, though? Because there are quite a lot of celebrities out there who are quite religious. Some aren’t. Now one can see life in black and white, pretend like it’s one big conspiracy theory. Through confirmation bias you could nit-pick some celebrities who are outspoken about being irreligious and one might see an ‘agenda’, somehow. But meh… I’m not buying it. Pierce Brosnan, for instance, is Christian. Bond himself!

Pierce was heartbroken when his first wife died of cancer, leaving him a single father of three. “It always helps to have a bit of prayer in your back pocket,” Brosnan said in an interview. “At the end of the day, you have to have something and for me that is God, Jesus, my Catholic upbringing, my faith.”

Brosnan again found solace in his faith when he lost his daughter Charlotte in 2013 — she died of the same cancer that killed her mother, Brosnan’s first wife. But there are many more devout believers in Hollywood who take comfort in their beliefs. Take this fellow for example, Stephen Colbert.

Now many would be quick to assume Colbert is your “typical liberal atheist”, but no, the man’s a devout Christian. He said he lost his faith in his 20s and felt lost for a little while… then one day, on a cold night in Chicago, a complete stranger handed Stephen a little Bible. He opened it and it randomly showed him the Sermon on the Mount.

Colbert read the sermon. It moved him. It touched him. And he’s been a believer ever since. Is he the only one? No, far from it. Justin Bieber and Kanye West are devout Christians. So is Denzel Washington. So is Chris Pratt.

Oh and what about Nathalie Portman? She’s not Christian, but she takes her Jewish faith seriously. She, too, is a religious woman. And like Denzel, Pratt and Brosnan, Portman is about as A-list as they come.

On the non-Christian, non-Abrahamic side, there’s also Orlando Bloom who is a Buddist and takes his faith every bit as serious as the others in my list. And what to think of Sean Astin, whose loyal Samwise followed Elijah Wood’s Frodo to the ends of the world? Astin is as loyal to Christ as Sam was to Frodo.

“I’m not always sure I’m a good Christian,” Sean Astin humbly admitted, “but I always try to be forgiving. I feel the forgiveness part of my faith is the key.”

So no, I don’t think “the majority of A-listers” are atheists. Some are. Some are not. Some are private about what they believe. And others are unashamed of their faith, proud of it, and happy to discuss it when asked.
