Why do good shows get cancelled?

Good shows get cancelled because show business is, primarily, a business.

When the network doesn’t think the cost of buying episodes will get the necessary payback in advertising revenues, you're out.

My favourite show was House, M.D. When Hugh Laurie signed up for Season 1, he was making a decent salary of $50,000 per episode. Then the show became a big hit. So, by the time Season 8 rolled around, he was the highest-paid male lead on television, making over $700,000 per episode.

And most of the cast wanted similar raises. The producers tried to write some of them out of the show, but they know that even a supporting character has a following and losing them could hurt the show’s ratings
