Why did the actor Elliot (formerly Ellen) Page come out as transgender?

According to Ellen Page, she no longer feels like a woman. She announced on her instagram that she wishes to be a he from now on. Page’s new first name of choice is Elliot Page. As Elliot, we’ll likely see a pretty big change of appearance to match this new identity. Why now? God, I have no clue. I’m not Ellen Page. Or Elliot Page. I’m not an insider. She may have struggled with this for a while. Or maybe it’s new. I don’t know. It’ll take some getting used to for the public, but I guess we’ll get there.

Doctors are pretty good at this stuff nowadays. And it seems FtM transgenders (female-to-male) tend to pass better than MtF (male-to-female). I don’t know why, maybe it’s the hormones. A feminine face, with testosterone injections, will easily look masculine in most cases. The male hormones injected result in the growth of facial hair and even alter bone structure somewhat. Take the daughter of singers Cher and Sonny Bono, for instance. Went by Chastity Bono before:

That blond girl next to Cher. Pretty girly, no? Here, look at a more recent image! Now, Chastity goes by Chaz Bono. Identifies as a man. And looks every bit the part — just another bloke you could run into in a hardware store on a saturday morning.

I don’t know why Ellen Page changed her gender. I don’t know why drove her to decide on being Elliot Page instead. I don’t know, and unless she tells us, we’ll never have a clue.

It makes me wonder, though, and I hope this isn’t insensitive or what-not… but if you identify as a lesbian woman before, and then ‘come out’ as a transgender man, does that make Page straight again? Because in that case, we’ve come full circle.
