Who is the best “up-and-coming” actor to watch or keep an eye on in Hollywood?

Florence Pugh is on the edge of a massive breakthrough.

In just a few years, Florence has managed to captivate audiences with her remarkable on-screen presence to go from relatively unknown to the brink of worldwide fame.

Her first semi-breakout role was her part in Lady Macbeth

At just 19, she was tasked to play the lead role of Katherine, a girl trapped into marriage who unleashes out on everyone around her and goes completely insane.

Critics immediately praised Pugh’s not only strong performance but enigmatic stage presence partly due to her deep voice — much like Emma Stone.

While the movie had it’s own merits, it was undoubtedly thanks to Florences performance that uplifted the entire movie. She played the carefree attitude of Katherine to that of an accomplished actor.

With certainly a extremely promising performance from Florence. Her roles began to attract a small fanbase.

Following Lady Macbeth she played her part in several TV shows and movies. Some good, others not so much — but enough to keep her name circling around.

Come 2019, rightfully titled “The Year of Pugh”.

What better way to start the year than as the lead alongside Dwayne Johnson in “fighting with my family”.

And what better way to start my own year other than watching Florence absolutely kill the role as a goth wrestler.

Must I say more?

But those who loved Fighting with my Family were in for a shock when she turned a full 180, sweeping away all hints of confidence and bravery to play Dani in Midsommar.

What a performance.

If you remember Toni Colette’s acting in Ari Aster’s previous work Hereditary you’ll find that Pugh carried the same caliber of acting over into Midsommar.

As howling, sobbing and internally broken Dani, Pugh drew on her charm and voice to blossom into what I consider to be the greatest performance in 2019. She embodied the character in all her vulnerable but terrifying glory.

She asserts herself across the screen and acts with a delicate balance of emotions and much like Lady Macbeth, Midsommar would be much less of a film without her performance. The film largely rests on her performance and she delivers with flying colours.

Just like Toni Colette however, the academy seemed to gloss over this role and she ended up with no nomination.

But Florence had one more ace up her sleeve, this time, it would be one the academy recognised.

Enter, Little Women

In a cast with Meryl Streep, Timothée Chalamet, Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson and Laura Dern it is Florence Pugh who reigns supreme

This is of course thanks to her remarkable screen presence, with every scene Florence is in, that is the scene you pay attention.

Especially the scenes during the present time, Florence harnesses all her abilities to create that charm that radiates from scene to scene. She turned a infamous bratty character into the standout.

A great example of this is the now well known “Marriage Monologue” was an afterthought and was written moments before the actual scene.

But it was delivered as if if was rehearsed over several weeks from a established actor.

Little Women was the film for florence to finally earn the attention of the world, she received almost worldwide acclaim, not just by the critics but by the academy. At 23 she received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor

Now with the announce of her entrance into the MCU in Black Widow along side Scarlett Johansson she will shoot into unimaginable heights.

I think people underestimate just how influential the MCU is on people’s careers. They turned Chris Evans from a relatively unknown actor into an A lister that has no problem earning role after role.

Or Chris Hemsworth, from little Australian to one of the biggest male actors in Hollywood.

So imagine the success Pugh will find as a young, oscar nominated, experienced and very talented actress.

The studios will be watching very closely, she has already been cast into Olivia Wilde’s new film alongside Shia LaBeouf and Chris Pine.

Not so much up and coming anymore but I wouldn’t be surprised if she reaches the heights of Emma Stone and Scarlett Johansson in the upcoming years.

All eyes are on her as of now.

Pugh has a very bright future ahead of her.
