If I had to describe the majority of Disney’s live-action remakes with one word, that word would be ‘unnecessary.’
I firmly believe that is the primary reason most of them have been lacklustre.
I also take umbrage with Disney’s remake strategy – they are trying to cash-in on beloved properties but that’s a double-edged sword because it’s difficult to improve on greatness.
The Lion King and Aladdin couldn’t be improved upon. There was no room.
As a money-making vehicle, these remakes are serving the House of Mouse rather nicely.
But there is one movie in their repertoire that is crying out to be remade.
A movie that will not only benefit tremendously with a live-action treatment but also one that has room for improvement in terms of narrative and pacing.
That movie is Treasure Planet.
Propelled by a thrilling sense of adventure, gorgeous animation, evocative music and colourful, relatable characters, Treasure Planet is one of the most purely fun films in the Disney animation stable.
Like so many great stories, Treasure Planet is about a protagonist with humble origins, but one whose destiny lies in the stars.
Think A New Hope, or more appropriately, Solo. Or Jupiter Ascending if it was well put together.
I cite those movies not merely because of their narrative similarity, but also the visual possibilities of a live-action Treasure Planet movie.
Even in its animated form, there are few sights in Disney movies more memorable than seeing the RLS Legacy cruising serenely through the etherium's sea of stars.
The movie’s visual palette will translate splendidly to live-action.
In terms of visuals, It’s Pirates of The Caribbean meets Total Recall, all set in space.
And here’s the recipe to bring this dream to fruition:
- Hire Phil Lord and Chris Miller. This is the perfect vehicle for them to try and complete what they couldn’t with Solo. That combined with their narrative work in Into The Spiderverse makes them the ideal candidates for the job.
- Get Tom Holland to play Jim Hawkins.
- Hire The Wachowski siblings as visual effects consultants. A live-action Treasure Planet will do well to take visual cues from Jupiter Ascending.
Treasure Planet has a great story to tell. And its visual possibilities are limitless.
A live-action Treasure Planet could make good on the promise of Solo and Jupiter Ascending. It could be the best of both those movies.
And that is a tantalising prospect.
