There are a lot of actors who can’t stand each other, but because they are professional actors, and acting is their tradecraft, they manage to mask their mutual contempt for each other long enough to finish the project, sometimes this hatred result in the actors never working with each other again, while other times hate can turn into a blossoming relationship.
Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling in The Notebook: this film pushed the two main leads, Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling to wider recognition, it’s also one of the greatest romance film. Although McAdams and Gosling plays a loving couple in the movie, they have amazing chemistry and their performance received widespread achieve, but during filming, they absolute hated working with each other. Director Nick Cassavetes recalls screaming matches between Gosling and McAdams, and Gosling even wanted a stand-in to read McAdams’s lines so he didn’t have to act while looking at her, he even tried to kick her off the set. After filming they became a couple for 3 years, and even after break-up, they are still good friends.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes in Romeo + Juliet: this film pushed Leonardo DiCaprio into a teen icon, and Titanic cemented his status, most people did not know Claire Danes actually had the chance to work with Leo again in Titanic but she refused the role that made Kate Winslet internationally famous; despite creating one of the steamiest love story in history, Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes did not enjoy working together. They totally avoid each other offset so they don’t have to interact when it’s not required. DiCaprio is 21, Danes is 16, Danes calls DiCaprio immature for his frequent pranking on the film set, while DiCaprio calls Danes for too uptight and too professional, and can’t enjoy a good laugh on set. Regardless of the mutual animosity, Danes and DiCaprio managed to make their on-screen relationship loving and heartbreaking at the same time.
Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh in Gone with the Wind: this film was widely considered as one of the best love story ever created, it did not age very well because of the historical revisionism that glorified slavery, but the main leads Clark Gable and the then-unknown Vivien Leigh become widely successful, and they both won Best Actor / Best Actress Oscars respectively. Although their on-screen romance is very famous, Vivien Leigh hated kissing Gable. Clark Gable at the time, hated the character Rhett Butler, but because he was going through a divorce and needed the money, he had to make the film. Vivien Leigh was a relatively unknown actress from Britain, while Clark Gable was at the height of his fame, and a known womanizer. Clark Gable is a heavy smoker, a heavily drinker and had almost full set of dentures when he was 32, he actually become widely known among the leading ladies in Hollywood that the handsome, devilish charming Clark Gable has horridly bad breath, it did not smell good when Vivien Leigh had to kiss him.
Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep in Kramer vs. Kramer: Dustin Hoffman is a great actor with outstanding acting skills, but because he takes his perfectionist method acting to an extreme, he is an awful human being to work with. During the filming of Kramer vs. Kramer, where Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep plays a couple going through a divorce and custody battle. Hoffman was quite hostile toward Streep. Kramer vs. Kramer was the first movies with Meryl Streep playing a lead character, at the time, she was just starting to earn recognition for her acting skills, and Hoffman was at the peak of his fame. The filming was problematic for Meryl as she was grieving for the death of her fiancé actor John Cazale, who died from lung cancer (Cazale had starred 5 films in 7 years, all of them nominated for Best Picture, Cazale is best known for playing Fredo in The Godfather). Hoffman being his usual douchebag self decided to grill Streep on her acting by intentionally insulting the deceased John Cazale, hurling insults and obscenities toward Streep, threw a wine glass against the wall without telling her, and slapped her without telling her. If this kind of behavior happened in the present day, Dustin Hoffman probably will never work again.
