The three names that came to mind: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks, Daniel Day-Lewis.
But who would be best?
All 3 are great at picking films. All 3 land on All Time Best Actor lists over and over.
And - they are just plain fun to watch in action.
So how do we narrow this list down?
Let’s take it from a different angle:
If there was a random script generator, and I had to pick the actor prior to the script being generated, and the outcome of that movie would determine<insert urgency> (if I get rich, if I get beheaded, save the world, etc etc).
My first instinct was Tom Hanks.
(Almost) everything he touches is magic. He’s extremely relatable and natural in every role. He’s got enough money that he could probably throw it at the film to fix it if the movie was beginning to look like a cheap straight-to-DVD Cineskunk. I just invented that word.
But. He doesn’t really play bad guys very well.
Daniel Day-Lewis.
He’s probably the most technically proficient as an actor of the 3. And perhaps the most respected among fellow-actors. He can play any role you put in front of him. And probably deserved more Oscars than he currently owns.
But - he doesn’t have much emergency funding to fix a bad film. And more importantly, he’s retired.
Alas - we have good ol’Leo and his Babe Yacht he likes to parade around on.
Leonardo, despite being amazing, is my least favorite of these 3. But he’s the guy. He can lead most movies to the promised land. He’s salvaged bad movies before. he can act for days. And ^ obviously has the money necessary to save a bad movie.
But I think we’d all be safe with any 3 of these fellas.
Most of the time….
