What is the greatest example of an actor only being in a movie for the money?

If you run a Google search for ‘synonyms for peaks and troughs,’ you’ll find results such as ‘ebb and flow’ and ‘highs and lows.’

‘Ben Affleck’s career’ will also be somewhere in there, if you look closely.

He remains, to this day, the youngest recipient of the Best Original Screenplay Oscar. The highest of highs. But he was also in Gigli. The lowest of lows.

2003 was a particularly tough year for Affleck. Along with Gigli, he also starred in Daredevil and Paycheck.

All three were critical misfires. He was nominated for a Razzie award for all three of those movies. He won.

Gob Bluth’s patented ‘I’ve made a huge mistake’ face.

Conan O’Brien, on his talk show, asked Affleck why he did Paycheck.

Affleck’s response: “The answer lies in the title.”[1]

Many people attached with Super Mario Bros. have made their dissatisfaction with the movie apparent.

Although the movie was critically panned upon release, it has since gone on to achieve somewhat cult status.

The late, great Dennis Hopper, however, who played King Koopa, wasn’t a fan of the film.

Hopper set the record straight on Late Night with Conan O’Brien (There he is again).

“Have you made some movies you’re not super proud of?” Conan asked. [2]

To which, Hopper replied:

I made a picture called Super Mario Bros., and my six-year-old son at the time — he’s now 18 — he said, ‘Dad I think you’re probably a pretty good actor, but why did you play that terrible guy, King Koopa, in Super Mario Bros.?’

And I said, ‘Well Henry, I did that so you could have shoes.’

And he said, ‘Dad, I don’t need shoes that badly.’
