My Friend Soren was born and raised in Myanmar (Burma) and currently residing in the US, so he think I can answer this question. When he think about American breakfast, foods that pop up in hi mind are usually pancakes, waffles, eggs, bacon, sausages, toasted bread and butter which usually looks like this (photo credit : ihop)
Burmese breakfast is very different from the American breakfast. We have mostly noodle options for breakfast as well as rice options sometimes. These are 5 most popular breakfast options in Myanmar.
1. Mohingar
This fish flavored rice-noodle soup (unofficial Myanmar national dish) is a famous breakfast dish all over the country. The smell might be bothering as its ingredients not only include fish but fish sauce and fish paste, but this is another must-try. Made with round rice-noodles served in a herbal fish soup, often supplemented with crunchy pitch of banana stem and fried beans and eggs, the dish is seasoned to taste with a squeeze of lime and flakes of dried chili.
2. Shan Noodles
There’s no better dish than a bowl of Shan noodles for locals to wake up to in the morning. This rice noodle dish is made with grounded chickpeas covered with chicken or pork paste, and tossed in sweet chilli sauce. Shan noodles have a lighter flavour than Mohinga and can be either wet or dry noodles.
3. Ohn No Khauk Swe (Coconut Noodles)
While Mohingar is more well-known, the Burmese Chicken Coconut Noodles is arguably the most well-loved breakfast dish by both locals and tourists alike. If you enjoy curry or Thai dishes, you are likely to enjoy this dish as well.
Bite-sized chicken cubes marinated with turmeric powder and fish sauce are sauteed with red pepper powder, garlic, ginger and onions to create a mild, flavorful curry. Coconut milk and chickpea flour thickens, richens and sweetens the broth. The creaminess is then balanced by chicken stock, making it just light enough to be served at breakfast with egg noodles.
The garnishes are similar to Mohingar’s: lime wedges, boiled eggs, coriander, sliced onions, scallions and a few strands of deep fried egg noodles (see crispy white swirly strands in picture).
4. Si Hta Min (yellow sticky rice)
Si Hta Minn or Yellow Myanmar Sticky Rice is always simple and delicious. It's one of the typical breakfast in Myanmar and also a popular dish in Pagoda festivals. Steamed peas and fried dried fish is a perfect duo with Si Hta Minn.
5. Puri / Dim Sum
Because of its geographical proximity with India and China, Indian and Chinese foods sometimes integrated into Burmese culture. Popular breakfast dishes in Myanmar include Indian disheslike Puri and Dosa, as well as Chinese Dim Sum.
