Shocked you the most about Jennifer Lawrence

What shocked me most about Jennifer Lawrence was her winning an Oscar. She was the second-youngest winner of the much respected award in its entire storied existence. And I was shocked because I felt it was a bit too soon, and many actresses whom I regard far better than her, failed to win an award at her age, or at any age for that matter.

Now I’m not saying Jennifer Lawrence isn’t a good actress — I’ve seen her in enough movies to determine she’s a fine actress. Is she the best, however? Was she even the best in her craft in the years she was nominated, and the year she won? I’m not convinced. I feel like she was seen as relatable. Likable. Easy-going, charismatic. Not to mention, pretty. And her nudes leaked and she was ashamed and she kinda needed a win… I don’t know.

Is she good? Oh, yes. Iconic? Not really… There are some actors you see the name of, you see their face coming into view on the screen and you just know, in that very moment — this is going to be a great movie. Or at the very least, an enjoyable film. Jennifer Lawrence isn’t such an actress to me. So her being rewarded as if she is in a category where so many true greats have been snubbed, felt off.

Watching her win an Oscar reminded me not of how great Lawrence is. But rather, of how sad it is that Angela Bassett, Michelle Pfeiffer, Annette Bening, Sigourney Weaver and Helena Bonham-Carter have no Oscars to their name after many years of delivering top-notch work and Jennifer, mediocre compared to many of them, won one at 22…
