PUBG is more than just a regular shooting game. It is strategy + skill set. After playing it for over 9 months, I can confidently list down how a newbie can hit the high tiers in PUBG.
I will try to mention ways to improve at each step if possible. Else, that comes from experience.
I won’t say one needs to play on 2/3/4/5/10 finger claws to do these. I had friends in PUBG who maintained 6+ k/d in ACE tier Asia using the default thumb setup. I will list down the things in step-wise manner. Start each step at a slower pace and when you get comfortable, increase the pace or devise your own methods which pushes you out of your comfort zone.
- Learn basic movements: As a kid grows, first he learns to move before he runs. Similarly, movement is essential. I have seen many players having trouble with this (even in Platinum tier). Simply roam around for a few days using jump, crouch, prone in the training room or the map. Move in houses, jump through windows, jump across walls etc. Learn Bunny hops, which is useful when you are being shot at from a distance.
- Master the joystick: This comes under the movements as well but I mentioned this explicitly because movement consists of 2 parts:
- Controlling the joystick.
- Controlling the cross hair (, viz, swiping the screen). The thumb rule is, one should never lift his thumb from the joystick.
- Find the Right sensitivity: Don’t just go to YouTube and search for ***’s sensitivity and copy them. No, it doesn’t work that way my friend. Sensitivity is device dependent. Different mobile devices have their unique calibrations of sensitivity. Also, it depends a bit on the quality of the hardware used in the device. So, practice in war mode and find the right sensitivity. Yes, you do need to refer to YouTube but to find out what the different sections in the sensitivity section imply.
- Improve Aim: This is extremely important. Damage stats: Head > Body > Limbs. So, always try to AIM for the head.
- Practice 100’s of Kar98 matches in war mode and always aim for the head. Sensitivity and reaction time play a crucial role here. If you have the right sensitivity, aiming for the head will be quite easy. But if it’s too high to too low, you will have a hard time aiming for that head. Improve accuracy of head shots with every match.
- Use the app ‘Aim Master’ to improve this skill. This step will take some time, but then you gotta stick to it. Just play it for 5–10 mins before PUBG.
- Learn recoil control: Most of the PUBG population doesn’t use AKM because of it’s recoil. But once controlled, this gun is as good as the Drop guns. This gun is a beast and my personal favorite.
- Start with an easy recoil gun, say M416 or vector. use red dot and shoot the targets in training ground at 30 m. Once you feel easy, switch to higher scopes progressively. Once you are comfortable, increase the distance, then switch to guns with higher recoil; AKM maybe(? :P). One trick here with recoil for 6x is to convert it to 3x which reduces the recoil drastically.
- One can use Gyroscope as well for recoil control.
Points after this are quite advanced and these separate the newbies from the experienced players. These can’t be learned in war mode or training ground. You need to play real matches to learn these or play in mini zone.
- Learn to play Strategically: This depends from player to player and from situation to situation. This does come with experience, but can be improved by analyzing the situation. One way to improve this is by playing solo vs squad. Yes you will loose the 1st few matches but if you analyze what different you could have done, you will win coming matches.
- Improve Reaction Time: This is a very minute thing but comes at a great cost. If both you and your enemy are face to face, the one with better aim and reaction time will survive (although their respective guns also matter, but skills can nullify the difference). Use the app ‘reaction trainer’ to improve this part. Again, this step will as well take some time, but consistency is the key.
- Be as fast as lightning: Be fast. Be insanely fast. Don’t give your opponent any opportunity to think or even take an aim on you. What I mean by this is to reduce the time to think what to do next. You spot an enemy- don’t camp and plan your next moves. Rather go in there, and get that Chicken Dinner! But that doesn’t mean you don’t strategize. You definitely do that- but efficiently and quickly.
- Learn Compound Movements: Once basic movements are mastered, this makes sense. The motto of this is to dodge as many bullets as possible as well as take down the enemy. Keep moving to dodge the bullets. Moving here doesn’t necessarily mean to change your position. It can be moving your upper body while standing still or bunny hops or leaning to sides. After all, it gets harder to hit a moving target, right?
- Eg: One of my personal favorite in close encounter was maneuvering left & right and alternating the peeks. Devise your own movements and see what works for you. Just use one or more combinations of these: peek left, peek right, crouch, maneuver, jump.
- This is where you might want to switch to 4/5 finger claw.
- Personalize a Gun combination and stick to it: I always used AKM+ M416. Didn’t matter if I get AWM. Stick to the combination in every match. What this does is:
I recently joined PUBG (not even two days), so, I feel this list of tips and tricks should be good for mostly new comers. My friend suggested me to join this game and after playing initially I feel I am quite good at it. Here’s my recent career history just to give credibility to this answer.
You can find my server stats at the end of this answer.
Anyway here’s a list of tips and tricks that helped me get familiar with this game and dominate the game right from the start-
- I always land right at the start of the game and head to the farthest corner of the map, with a bunch of buildings in sight. And always, always by the sea shore! The task is to get the most possible items while leaving leaving least possible openings. If you’re by the sea shore, that eliminates the possibility of anyone coming up that way.
- Always have a vehicle with you (preferably a shielded one like a jeep). It serves four purposes. Two of them- allows quick escape and if caught up in a bad position, you can exit the vehicle and use it as a cover for a short while to kill your enemies. Remember, most of the players playing against you will be newbies as well. They are not trying to blowup your vehicle. If you see your vehicle smoking get out of there while keeping the enemies on the opposite side of the vehicle
3. Always stay right at the edge of the circle, and that’s the third use of vehicle. I usually move with the blue circle coming up behind me. Once you are at the edge, scope out that no one is coming up from behind the circle. Next focus ahead. But now you know that no one is going to creep up to you from behind. Also, you would sometimes find guys on foot desperately running to reach the edge, just run them over.
4. Fourth use of vehicle. Remember in this game it’s imperative that you minimize your openings. I always position the vehicle at right angle to a rock or building if I need to get down. That way you only need to worry about two openings. If anyone tries to attack you from behind, they will need to get close to you and most of the time you will hear them coming.
5. I prefer to play in third person view. That way you can see past the edges of a building or above a rock to see the position of other players while they are unaware of you. for example if you are behind a tree and there are players across the field in front of you, you can just move your mouse to track them without giving up your position.
6. Guns (very important)- Like I said I am very new to the game and have absolutely no idea about which gun is good and which one not. Most players would find me sprinting across in my underwear holding a frying pan in my hand. I always try to find the gun with most ammo available at the time. I avoid shotguns. At the beginning of the game you are trying to get good at aiming. Shot guns have long reloads and take time between consecutive shots. As a newbie if someone crops up in front of you, it is better to empty 30 quick rounds at him and hope he dies. Shot gun takes practice.
7. Stay mobile. If someone fires at you, don’t stop, turn and shoot. Ideally if there is a cover close by (like buildings, rocks or trees) head behind cover. If not, there are two possibilities. One- the enemy is too close to you, run in a lateral direction, then turn and fire. Most probably the enemy is firing at you while scoping. Scopes are slow to turn and it becomes difficult to keep track of fast moving targets. Use that to your advantage. Second- the enemy is somewhere far from you. In that case take a prone position, move a bit in the grass, locate him and fire. Proning reduces the target size and makes it difficult to land a decisive blow. Same thing also applies for targets close to you. If target suddenly jumps in front of from behind a building. Quickly crouch or prone and shoot back. Better than standing up and firing.
8. The ultimate goal is to survive. If you see two players engaging each other in front of you, wait till one of them is dead before firing. If you are outnumbered, get out. Don’t engage. Get away from that position.
This guide is focussed on survival and not on killing. Following the above logic, I mostly end up top 10 even in my crappy old phone with huge lag and get decent kills. My server stats are below-

Edit: I don't understand why all the comments I am getting are about how the early tiers of the game are filled with bots. I did mention this guide is for beginners. And how is that relevant to my answer? If you have any problem with any of the points in my answer talk about that. If you mention bots then explain how that goes against my tips. Otherwise it's just irrelevant.
- You get used to the recoil control of the gun.
- You develop a muscle memory for the recoil.
- You learn the in’s and out’s of the particular weapons.
So, these are just a few things I learned while playing PUBG. There are a few more like never reload while in close fight- rather switch guns, don’t engage in healing or reviving during encounters etc. These come naturally with experience.
Don’t engage in pushing ranks in the initial days. Simply Hot drop solo vs squad in Georgo/ Novo/ Pochinki/ Military base- almost every flight route has atleast one of these locations. Hot drop and try to get as many kills as possible. Doesn’t matter if you get killed in 5 mins of the match after killing 8 people. Although you will loose rating points, but your k/d will automatically be up and you will learn a lot. That’s how you Persevere.
