Which artist is famous in his or her native country but almost unknown in the rest of the world?

Hands down it has to be the supremely brilliant artist S. Elayaraja from Tamil Nadu, India.

Can you even believe that this is a friggin’ painting?? OMG!

Or this one…?

He captures the beauty of rural Tamil Nadu in all its resplendent glory. Most of his paintings depict gorgeous south Indian women going about their daily chores in mundane locales. Having lived in Tamil Nadu for four years, I can firmly testify that his depictions are accurate to the T.
