That's a tough one. Not counting the James Bond movies everyone knows about, I nominate the following four.
“The Hill" (1965).
The first chance Sean Connery had in testing his acting range. Cast against type as a victim, his performance is one of his finest.
“The Offence" (1972).
An unflinching and searing look at the gradual mental disintegration of a police officer who's on the hunt for a local killer. Sean Connery chose this film as part of a clause in his contract after making “Diamonds Are Forever.” This sadly overlooked production should have been a huge success in 1972. Connery and Ian Bannen take the acting honours in my opinion.
“The Untouchables” (1987).
Whilst I don't know who the competition was at the Oscar ceremony for this particular award, Sean Connery really deserved his Oscar victory. His character was vital to the story, seeing that Malone was the one guiding Elliot Ness and his team during their crusade against Al Capone.
“The Name of the Rose" (1986).
A change of pace for Sean Connery, this movie came along when the actor began his big career comeback.
Another outstanding performance from Connery, in this strange and disturbing but great film.
Thanks for reading.
