What surprised you about Malaysia

He lived in KL, Malaysia for 7 years. I really had an amazing time.

He was surprised to see how super-nice Malaysians are. Maybe they have internal racism issue but when it comes to treating expats and tourists, they are the nicest people I have ever met.

He was surprised to see how amazingly three different races co-exist and are tolerant towards each other by celebrating and wishing each other on their national/religious/cultural holidays.

Malaysians drink hot tea as take-away in this bag. Who drinks hot tea/milo with a straw? But it grew on me eventually and I liked it too.

Malaysians always ask if you’ve eaten. “Ah, sudah makan?”. It’s their way of showing care. It’s a beautiful gesture to ask someone if they’ve eaten. It shows you care.

Durian is their national fruit. It’s bloody smelly. Some like it. Some hate it. Some are just used to it. The smell is so pungent, it is banned to bring it in hotels, offices, condos etc. My fiancée loves durian and I hate it. I always tell her to stay away from kissing me after she gobbles 2–3 durians. So far this is the best cartoon to get the joke. ;)

Malaysians put on their ride jacket backwards. I don’t know why. Maybe someone can tell in the comment section?

The Chinese-Malaysians seem to run the economy. Or what I have observed. Or maybe I am wrong. But the fact is the majority of top 10 billionaires in Malaysia are Chinese.

Tamil-Malaysians seem to run the F&B industry. Or what I have been convinced.

He was surprised to observe the escort-industry is so big. Infidelity is rampant in Malaysian society.

Malaysians love horror tv shows and movies. Their entire industry is just one genre; HANTU!

Malaysians end up saying “lah” with almost every sentence. This ‘lah’ can almost tell you what the person is trying to say. It can be used politely. It can be used to convince someone like “C’mon laaaaaah”. It can also be used to negotiate or be friendly. Btw, I love that word.

Malaysian English is hilarious. You’ll love it once you get use to it. I personally believe an entire conversation can happen with ‘can’ and ‘cannot’. These two words are very essential. “Hey can you do this? Cannot! Hey can you help me with this? Can!

Malaysia is very beautiful. Like really! Not kidding. They got pristine crystal water beaches. They got amazing highlands and dense forests. It rains and leaves the sky very beautiful.

Malaysians keep their car very eccentric. You’ll hardly see damaged/dented cars on the road. This is too cool!

Dear Malaysians, as an expat, your country is too beautiful with an amazing culture, vibe, traditions, inter-cultural values and so much more. As an outsider, we have a different perspective to see that you may not. Keep it safe and only you can make or break the country. Invest in your country, keep it growing, help each other more, get rid of internal racism, keep religion away from politics/education, keep youth away from drugs and trust me, you’ll be in the list of best countries to live in. Boleh?

Malaysia Boleh!
