What is a great movie that stars/co-stars an actor that came out right before or a few years before they became famous in another role?

The Impossible (2012), this Spanish film has a great cast: Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor, and before he’s famous as Peter-Parker / Spider-Man, Tom Holland (this movie is Tom Holland’s acting debut). It’s a very accurate retelling of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

Weird Science (1985), this teen sci-fi comedy was written and directed by John Hughes, just after The Breakfast Club, but before Ferris Bueller and Home Alone. This teen film tells the story of 2 social outcasts (nerds) who create a beautiful woman in a twist version of Frankenstein. This film stars a pre-Chaplin Robert Downey Jr, playing one of the villain roles.

42 (2013), before the late Chadwick Boseman put on the vibranium suit of Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War; Boseman delivered a masterful performance in the biographical sports film on Jackie Robinson.

Catch Me If You Can (2002), this 2002 biographical crime film co-starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks is a great cat-and-mouse game, and it contains plenty of actresses before they made it big: Amy Adams, Ellen Pompeo, Jennifer Gardner, and Elizabeth Banks all have minor supporting roles in this film before they became household names on their own.

The Outsider (1983), this adaptation of S.E. Hinton’s coming-of-age novel of the same name was directed Francis Ford Coppola, and starring an ensemble cast of up-and-coming stars, everyone in the cast later became a household name on their own. This film contains Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Matt Dillon, Patrick Swazye, Diane Lane, and most importantly, Tom Cruise, who plays a minor supporting character. This film is actually one of the few films that Tom Cruise did not have his signature smile and play the main role, it’s 5 month before the success of Risky Business, and 3 year before Top Gun.

Thelma and Louise (1991), this female buddy road film directed by Ridley Scott was a critical and commercial success, the actresses playing Thelma (Geena Davis) and Louise (Susan Sarandon) both earned an Oscar Best Actress nomination. This film is hailed as a milestone in feminism films, and it also brought a future superstar into the attention of the general public: Brad Pitt. Pitt plays JD, a cowboy hitchhiker, which granted him wider attention and defined him as a sex symbol.

The Panic in Needle Park (1971), this romantic drama portrays life among a group of heroin addicts who hang out in Needle Park (a nickname for Sherman Square on Manhattan’s Upper West Side near 72nd street and Broadway. This film earned critical acclaim from critics, Robert Ebert gave the film 3.5 star out of 4. It’s a good film depicting the dangers of drug abuse, and this film stars a then-unknown Al Pacino, who was casted into the role of Michael Corleone in the Godfather (1972) one year later.

Mystic Pizza (1988), this romantic comedy drama tells the story of sisters Kat & Daisy and their friend Jojo while they work at Mystic Pizza, dealing with coming of age and trying to find their places in the world. This film stars a pre-Pretty Woman (1990) Julia Roberts, and Matt Damon also have a small role in it.

Dangerous Liaison (1988), this period romantic drama contain an ensemble cast including Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Michelle Pfeiffer, Uma Thurman, and Keanu Reeves. This film is a modest box office success and earned 7 Oscar nomination, it’s a critical success with 93% on rotten tomatoes. This film contains a Pre-Point Break (1991) & Bill & Ted (1989) Keanu Reeves, and a pre-Pulp Fiction (1994) Uma Thurman.

Dazed and Confused (1993), this coming-of-age comedy was a minor success in the box office, but with high critical and commercial success over the year. The reason is because this film’s large ensemble cast of future stars, the most famous being Ben Affleck, Milla Jovovich, and Matthew McConaughey (this film is McConaughey’s breakout film). Affleck and Jovovich later became famous on their own with Good Will Hunting and The Fifth Element respectively.

Never Been Kissed (1999), this teen comedy is a box office success with mixed reviews, it has Drew Barrymore and David Arquette (both from Scream), and it also contains two stars before they were famous: James Franco and Jessica Alba, both of them would achieve breakthrough success with Spider-Man (2002) and Dark Angel (2000–2002) respectively.

Heavenly Creatures (1994), this New Zealand psychological thriller was directed by Peter Jackson (several years before LoTR catapult him to international fame). This film won the Silver Lion at the 51st Venice International film Festival, and it starred Kate Winslet (this is Winslet’s breakthrough performance), although the film barely made any money, critics give praise to the previously unknown Kate Winslet and Peter Jackson.

300 (2007), this almost superhero comic version of Frank Miller’s comic of the same name launched director Zack Snyder into the eyes of Warners Bro., the film is a commercial success and okay-film, it’s riddled with historical inaccuracies, but it did contain one small gem, it’s blink-and-you-missed-him moment, Michael Fassbender has a supporting role in this film, playing Stelios, a barechest muscular Spartan.

Six Degrees of Separation (1993), this critically acclaimed but commercial box office flops achieved a 88% rotten tomatoes rating, with praise given to Will Smith, who played against-type, as prior to this film he was primarily known for The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, this film he played as a con-artist. This film appeared 2 years before Will Smith become a giant in the summer blockbusters Bad Boys, 3 year before Independence Day, and 4 years before Men in Black that catapulted Smith into international superstar.

Not Another Teen Movies (2001), this parody film contains parody borrowed from late 70s, 80s, 90s, and early 2000s comedy, it includes anything from Grease (1978), Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986), to Dazed and Confused (1993) and American Pie (1999). It’s okay parody film, wouldn’t called it great, but this film feature a pre-Human Torch, pre-Captain America, Chris Evans.
