1. Stay away from strangers' cars. If a stranger pulls up in a car and offers you a ride, don't get in. You probably know that rule, right?
2. Carry protective items every day. Increase your ability to defend yourself and get attention. This can be as simple as carrying a whistle, some pepper spray, and a small flashlight. Or, depending on your situation, this could include a knife or firearm.
3. Make a lot of noise if you're scared. If a stranger ever tries to grab you, yell as loudly as you can, and try to getaway. You can shout things like, “Fire”, "Help! I don't know you!" or "Help! This isn't my dad!" People in the area will hear what's going on and help you, so make plenty of noise.
4. The answer on the street is always “no”. If a charity offers you candy, remember your mom's advice - don't talk to strangers. It's usually a scam. If you are ever offered a gift while walking down the street, just ignore and keep walking
5. Do stay alert. Keep your mind on your surroundings, who's in front of you, and who's behind you. Don’t wear headphones while walking. Don't fall asleep on the bus or the train. Don’t take shortcuts through dark places at night.
6. Keep it public. If you’re meeting up with someone from the internet or an app (like dating apps), ALWAYS meet up somewhere public, preferably a place with cameras.
7. Protect your privacy. Know how to avoid sharing personal information, especially with those you don’t know well, such as your photo id, phone number, and your address.
8. Sometimes, the airport is a good shelter. If you can't find a place to spend the night, try the airport. They have bathrooms, water fountains, and maybe even sleeping areas.
9. Take care of your belongings. Carry your purse close to your body and keep a firm grip on it. Carry a wallet in an inside coat or side trouser pocket, not in a rear trouser pocket.
10. Keep it low profile. Don't flaunt expensive jewelry or clothing. make sure you wear clothes that don't make you look like a walking wallet.
11. Sacrifice a few dollars. You could tell an assailant that you’ve got no money, but this may make them even more aggressive than they already are. Give up some money instead. Life and safety are the most important. Have some funds in an accessible place.
