Punjab is a place where people love to eat. It is world famous for its delicious hearty meals in the world.
Punjabi dishes are much loved across India and are well known for packing a punch.
It is said that people eat to live but Punjabis live to eat.
Here are a few famous recipes from Punjab
- Kadah
In Sikhism, Karah is a type of semolina halva made with equal portions of whole-wheat flour, clarified butter, and sugar. It is offered to all visitors to the Darbar Sahib in a Gurdwara. It is regarded as a treat for attendees of gurmat seminars.
2. Sarso ka saag and makki ki roti
Sarson ka Saag and Makki di Roti is the traditional dish of Punjab. It is the most popular winter dish of Punjabis. It is highly nutritious.
3. Punjabi chicken gravy
Out of the many Indian Chicken Recipes, this Punjabi Dhaba Style Chicken Curry Recipe is one of our favourites. Juicy morsels of chicken simmered in a smoky onion tomato gravy are perfect to pair with some Tandoori Roti.
4. Lassi
Lassi is the favourite drink of Punjabis. It is made from beaten curd and milk. It is a healthy drink as it does not contain any artificial flavours. It is usually served in tall steel glasses.
5. Rajma Chawal
Rajma is one of the favourite main course dishes of all Punjabi’s irrespective of age. It is served with steaming hot boiled rice called chawal.
6. Aloo ka paratha
Owing to my Punjabi roots, usually every weekend morning used to start with Parathas with huge blobs of butter on them. And I am talking about big, properly stuffed and thick parathas here. Not the skimpy and small variety people make these days.
7. Dal Makhani
Dal makhani is mostly always on our menu whenever we dine outside, which happens very rarely. Creamy and buttery Dal Makhani is one of India’s most loved dal!
This dal has whole black lentils cooked with butter and cream and simmered on low heat for that unique flavor.
8. Jalebi
It is an Indian Sweet. In Punjab, you can find jalebis being made in a large kadai (wok) full of hot oil at any corner halwai’s (confectioner) shop in the evenings and many people will stop by to buy some piping hot ones to eat with their chai.
9. Chole Bhatoore
Chole Bhature - a popular North Indian or Punjabi breakfast dish. Boiled chickpeas are simmered in spicy onion-tomato gravy and served with puffed, fried, crispy and soft bread aka bhatira
10. Butter Chicken
Punjab is known for the best chicken dishes, be it tandoori or curry chicken. One of the hot favourites of Punjabi’s is Butter Chicken.
It is high on calories as it contains butter but it is a mouth watering creamy dish and impossible to resist. It is best served with butter naan.
Punjabi dishes are the pride and joy of the Punjab. Food plays a huge cultural and social part of the Indian mindset and needless to say it is understandable. With such amazing flavours and foods, your taste buds are in for a treat.
