People don’t know that South Indian food is not just idli and dosa, let alone that each culture (Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalee, Tulu, Kodava, etc.) has totally different cuisines. Could we show people how diverse “South Indian food”

Yes, South Indian food is certainly not just idli-dosa. We also have, and I just type a few names in no particular order: uppittu, various kinds of flat breads such as chapatis, malabar parotta, akki rotti, ragi rotti, appam, and pesarattu just to name a few; guntapangana/paniyaram, semiya uppittu, bisi bele bath, puliyogare, chitranna, a variety of sweet spicy and tangy gojjus, a variety of veggie stir fries, fried food such as uddina vada, pooris, bajjis (fritters), sandige.

A typical feast at a formal ceremony such as a wedding. On plantain leaf? Yes please!

For meat eaters we have a plethora of dishes such as chicken, mutton and lamb curries and ishtews (stews), fish, prawns, and the classic Coorgi pandi curry that’s pork curry.

The dishes range from mild to hot and fiery and incorporate spices such as black pepper, red chilies (mild and hot varieties), cinnamon, cloves, cumin, mustard, sesame seeds, nutmeg, tamarind, pullicheri, coconut, etc.

There you go! There are far too many dishes to type here, and so I’ll stop. That’s a sneak-peak into Southern Indian food. Yes it is diverse and All of it is delicious!

Some more nom nom:

The following is a special treat in my family: Majjigehuli or Majjigapulusu with Nucchanunde or Kanduntalu. Mm mm mm!!

We also have many varieties of delicious sweets and desserts such as haalbaai, chiroti, feni, athrasa, baasundi, kodabu, etc.

Finally, the South Indian Filter Kapi! Now that’s one thing that we don’t mind being stereotyped for!! I know I don’t!! 😋

Most pictures are mine, some from Instagram.

Sankocha Pad-de Nidhaanavaage Ootā Maadi! Loose Translation: Eat your food slowly without any hesitation, to your heart’s content.
