Yes indeed........

Camel milk

Camel has been mentioned in Quran in different places and described a miracle of almighty God. Also, prophet Muhammad (PBUH) has recommend camel in his speech (hadith). The prophet (PBUH) has recommended camel milk for some diseases such as skin disease as remedy. Camel plays in important livestock which produced milk longer than any other ruminant under harsh condition of desert ecosystem. Camel milk is different from other ruminant milk different ways. Camel milk is rich in vitamin C and protective proteins such as lactoferrin, lactoperoxidase, immunoglobulins and lysozyme. Camel milk lacks β-lactoglobulin and used as an option for the individuals intolerant to lactose of cow's milk. Camel milk is extraordinary in terms of antioxidative agents, antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, anti-hepatitis, anti-arthritis, treatment for paratuberculosis, preventing aging, remedy for autoimmune diseases and cosmetics.

Camel milk has been used for centuries as a source nutrition in the Middle East, Asian and North African cultures. Nomads and Bedouins still rely on camel's milk nutritional properties, while generations of tribes have lived on camel milk entirely with a few dates for months in the harsh desert climate. Desert Farms has now captured their ancient knowledge and locked camel milk tight in a bottle.

While camel milk won’t likely be battling for shelf space with cow’s milk in the dairy section of your local supermarket any time soon, it is becoming a hot commodity. Some experts cite properties that they say may help fight a number of diseases, including diabetes, cancer, shingles and autism. It is also easier to digest than cow’s milk, making it popular among the lactose intolerant.

While the FDA has approved the consumption of camel milk in the United States, imports are restricted, and there are only about 3,000 camels in the United States, according to Dr. Millie Hinkle, founder of the American Camel Association and Camel Milk USA, which conducts research on camel milk industry.

According to the Australian Camel Industry Association, camel milk has five times the vitamin C and 10 times the iron compared to cow’s milk

What Is The Nutritional Value Of Camel Milk?

Camel milk has:

  • Protein: 3.1%
  • Fat: 3.5%
  • Lactose: 4.4%
  • Ash: 0.79%
  • Total solids: 11.9%

Camel milk contains most of the amino acids in fair amounts. Its proteins can be divided into two groups: caseins and whey proteins. Albumin, lactoferrin, immunoglobulins come under the whey group.

This milk contains low amounts of short-chain fatty acids but high amounts of long-chain fatty acids. Unsaturated fatty acids like linoleic acid are abundant, which is why camel milk has a better health quotient.

It also contains vitamins, such as vitamins A, E, D, B, and especially vitamin C, which cow and buffalo milk might lack. Minerals like calcium also appear to be relatively higher.

This nutritional profile is not the only reason you need to consider replacing your other milk options with camel milk. In the following section, we will explore what makes camel milk so popular and how it is different from the all-time favorite, cow milk.

What does it taste like?

Descriptions about its taste vary. Some say camel milk is sweet and delicious. Others say it tastes good but has a hint of salty flavor. Others say you start with just a shot glass to get used to it and then proceed to the point where you can drink all you want. Others say it tastes horrible. And still others say it tastes like milk, adding that’s because it is milk.

Of course, when it comes to any kind of milk, a lot of the taste depends on what the animal is eating and how it’s cared for. And also, taste can be impacted by how sanitary the milking operation, processing and storage facilities are.

Good option for people with milk allergies and intolerance

Lactose intolerance is a common condition caused by a deficiency of lactase, the enzyme needed to digest the sugar in dairy known as lactose. It can cause bloating, diarrhea, and abdominal pain after consumption of dairy products. Camel milk contains less lactose than cow’s milk, making it more tolerable for many people with lactose intolerance.

One study in 25 people with this condition found that only 2 participants had a mild reaction to roughly 1 cup (250 ml) of camel milk, while the rest were unaffected.

Camel milk also has a different protein profile than cow’s milk and appears to be better tolerated by those with an allergy to cow’s milk. One study in 35 children ages 4 months to 10.5 years old with cow’s milk allergy noted that only 20% were sensitive to camel milk through a skin-prick test.

What’s more, camel milk has been used to treat diarrhea caused by rotavirus for hundreds of years. Research suggests that the milk contains antibodies that help treat this diarrheal disease, which is especially common in children.

Help with Diabetes

Apart from being rich in many nutrients, camel milk can be used as a potential preventative medicine for diabetes. As per the studies conducted by some researchers in Bikaner, Rajasthan, camel milk has sufficient levels of insulin which can help prevent and even treat type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Since the balance of insulin and glucose is significant to prevent the incidence of diabetes, camel milk can be made a part of your regular diet to eliminate the use of insulin injections.

Promotes growth and development

Camel milk has such amazing levels of protein, which are not to be found in cow milk or goat milk. Since protein is a basic building block for the body, camel milk promotes the growth and development of your organ systems as well as bones. It is because of this reason that camel milk is often given to malnourished infants and children in many cultures.

Improves blood circulation

As previously mentioned, camel milk has a very high iron content in it. Since iron is an important component of red blood cells, camel milk has been used for preventing anemia. This iron composition of camel milk would improve the circulation of blood and furthermore, the oxygenation of many organ systems and extremities.

Promotes the health of your heart

The nutrition quotient of camel milk is compounded by its comprehensive set of fatty acids. Such an attribute can help in improving the cholesterol levels in your body. It reduces the bad cholesterol and helps in regulating blood pressure as well as reducing the incidence of heart attacks and strokes.

May Protect Your Liver

The nutrients in camel milk may help fight viruses that cause liver disease. In studies, camel milk was found to be effective in decreasing the elevated levels of certain liver enzymes, which is a sign of improvement of liver health. It also increases the levels of total body proteins, which are depleted during liver disease.

In another study, whole camel milk was found to be effective against hepatitis C virus. The use of the milk has been recommended in patients infected with the virus. However, the efficacy of camel milk in this regard needs further research. It controls the levels of liver enzymes (alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST)). Camel milk reduced hepatitis viral load in 75% of the patients.

These effects could be due to the milk’s minerals (like iron and zinc) and proteins. They have potent antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and immunomodulatory effects .

Closest to Breastmilk

In terms of total protein, fat, vitamins and minerals, camel milk is the closest you can get to breastmilk. As you know, breast milk has all the nutrients your baby needs in the right amounts. Now you have found the milk that is closest to mothers milk which is why it is often considered a suitable alternative for some babies and toddlers who need milk replacements due to high levels of phospholipids. People of all ages can drink camel milk to increase nutrient intake and improve digestion. It is antibacterial and low in lactose. Used medicinally by nomadic communities for centuries, fermented camel’s milk is still popular in Kazakhstan as a treatment for Tuberculosis and for HIV/AIDS in Kenya and Somalia. Research has been conducted into treating Crohn’s disease, breast cancer and autism, however, the most promising studies have been in the field of diabetes.

Conclusion

Camel milk is consisting of important nutrients that are required to keep the body healthy. It contains adequate ratio of antibacterial and antifungal agents that are useful for the prevention of various diseases, like diabetic, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, autism, Rota virus diarrhea, lactose intolerance, autoimmune disorders. It is miraculous milk but lacks plenty of research on its qualities, therefore many people are still unaware of its qualities. Thus, further research should be done at molecular levels to evaluate its qualities and impacts on health.

The European Union allowed the import of camel milk in their region. In the Middle Eastern countries, camel milk production has become a booming trade.

Bikaner based National Research Centre on Camel (NRCC) supplies camel milk as well as other products like delectable Indian desserts, butter, ghee and paneer.
