Positives: Little chance of getting suddenly fired. Hence more stable.
Hikes are periodic. Good number of leaves.
Benefits when it comes to loans, train travel.

Negatives:
Lots of caste based politics. This itself is enough to suck the life out of you. Slow growth. Transfers. Have to be respectful and servile to your bosses else they will make your life hell.
Slow career progress.
Private jobs:
Positives:
Good salaries but high risk. You may be fired anytime which has a great impact if you have family, loans.
Can easily switch companies if your boss is a jerk. More freedom to take your career the way you want to go.
Work from home and freelance opportunities.
Faster promotions.
Negatives:
Intense stress. Sometimes need to work on weekends and holidays.
Very less time for family.
No respect as you are just a resource to be used and thrown.
No pension after retirement. You have no money when you need it the most i.e after retirement.
In India, having government job is way better if you want a relaxed pace of life. Private job stress ages you fast and you end up with lots of health issues.
